John John Florence is the people’s champion. One need not look much further than when North Shore denizens turned out in droves for a parade to welcome John home after he won his first world title in 2016 in Portugal.
Over the holiday weekend, the humble champ took to Instagram to profer some advice regarding an issue near and dear to surfing’s soul. An avid sailor, John John posted a beautiful snippet of his seafaring journeys with the following note:
“We have had incredible opportunities to explore new parts of the ocean this year. Beautiful places that are completely remote. The more we sail and explore, the more we realize how much plastic is out there. It’s not going away on its own, I guess that’s the bad news. But the good news is that every one of us has the chance to do something about it. Simple things like carrying a reusable water bottle, and avoiding single-use plastics (we saw a ton of straws in this cave), and then just taking some time to clean up the places we enjoy. We were inspired on this trip by all the groups who are finding ways to be part of the solution.”
Well said, John John.
