John John Florence, who currently sits atop the World Surf League ratings, is a lot of things. He’s a new dad. A two-time world champion. The founder of the brand Florence (Marine x), and much more. He’s also representing the United States in the upcoming Olympic Games, which runs from July 26 to August 11. The surfing events will run, as you’re no doubt aware, at Teahupo’o. The WSL asked him to be a guest on its podcast, The Lineup with Dave Prodan, and it is a look at a driven, passionate surfer who’s surfing for the right reasons.
“Dave and John also dive into his mind-blowing performances this year that has led him to the current World No. 1 position on the rankings heading into Fiji and locking his seat at the Lexus WSL Finals at Lower Trestles for a chance at a third World Title,” the World Surf League writes. “He talks about his mindset entering 2024 and the ups and downs of the competitive surfing life. He reflects on how he went from not being too sure if he was going to compete this year and having ‘one foot in, one foot out’ the past few years to being fully committed heading into 2024.”
John’s mindset has changed pretty drastically over the last few years. Prodan and Florence also chatted about how how he is investing in himself, giving surfing the respect he feels it deserves as a competitor, and traveling with his crew to ensure he’s giving it his very best.”
They then go on to talk about the pressures of representing the USA at the Olympics and how he’s dealing with them. A big part of his new mindset stems from the fact that he’s a new father.
“He opens up about the importance of support, being the best version of himself for his son, and his family being the most important thing in his life,” the WSL continued. “He discusses bringing his brothers into the family business of Florence Marine X, working with brands like YETI and with long-time shaper Jon Pyzel, before wrapping up the pod with Instagram questions and a second run at the Lightning Round.”
