The Inertia

The waves at Supertubos are not easy ones to surf. “It’s a very difficult wave,” said Kelly Slater. “It likes a north wind. It likes a big giant swell to wrap around the headland. If the waves get too big, there’s too much water moving around. The waves break so close to the beach, so there are these rips that go out and kind of ruin where you might think is the good spot to sit.”

With the World Surf League’s Peniche event opening its window, most of the best surfers in the world are putting in their time at the wave. And although John John Florence is currently sitting far lower in the rankings that most would have expected, it cannot be denied that he is one of the best — if not the best. Just look at the one minute of waves you see above. Does he not look exceedingly comfortable?
