John John Florence is careful about what he lets the public see. He’s not the type to flog himself all over the internet, bashing our eyeballs with thousands of 10-second clips. Instead, he’ll create something pretty, something artistic, something with a bit of thought behind it. Something like Gravity, for example, or these little dribs and drabs. It’s curated stuff, you know? So when he does let something out into the the sunshine, it’s generally top quality stuff — and his latest YouTube offering is no different.
“Sharing a fun little edit that Parallel Sea cut to a new track from Jack Johnson and reggae legend Lee “Scratch” Perry,” the JJF team wrote. “The remix sounds rad!”
The edit, which features surfing from a young John John, an older John John, and Jack Johnson, is a peek at part of Jack Johnson’s upcoming album, In Between Dub. To make it, Johnson reached out to Lee “Scratch” Perry in 2020 to work on a few remixes.
In Between Dub, as you’ve likely surmised by now, is a play on Johnson’s 2005 LP In Between Dreams. Perry made a bit of original music and mixes from his home in Jamaica, then sent them to Johnson in Hawaii. Their work, though, was cut short in August of 2021, when Perry died at the age of 85.
“Growing up in Hawai’i with reggae music always on the radio, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry was a living legend,” Johnson said. “When I found out he was up for remixing a few of my songs I was blown away. The remixes evolved and he ended up adding his voice to my songs. It was like he had done a magic trick to the music. I will be forever grateful for the time, love, and energy that Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry put into this project.”
