The last time John John Florence went to Brazil, he did something a little more important than just surfing. Sure, it involved surfing, but it wasn’t for points or trophies. He spent a day with a local organization called Favela Radical, which seeks to better the community through surfing and other sports, technology, art, education, and sustainability. It’s a lofty goal, but every little bit counts.
Florence surfed and played soccer with a group of kids who’d come from town a few hours away. Seeing how much they appreciated surfing, and how stoked they were just to be in the water was pretty incredible,” Florence said. “You could see how much it meant to them just to have the opportunity to spend a full day outside enjoying themselves and learning something new. The organization has such a good thing going, and it was pretty awesome to see firsthand how Machu Picchu supports what they do. We left with a lot of perspective. It was a good reminder of how lucky we are to do what we do as surfers.”
