Pipeline is, perhaps, the most famous wave on Earth. There are a handful of surfers who really stand out there. That’s not an easy thing to do, considering the fact that it’s so iconic and draws a crowd when it’s on. John John Florence is impossible to ignore when he’s in the lineup, and in this short video from Off Da Lip, that couldn’t be more evident.
John John would never loudly assert his dominance. He just quietly goes about his business of catching the best waves from the best spot and surfing them better than just about anyone else.
He does have an advantage — growing up with Pipeline as your playground lends itself to a certain amount of comfort — but I’d wager that not just anyone who grew up riding it would end up being John John Florence. Otherwise, there would be more than one John John Florence. And there is definitely only one.
