John John Florence surfing Pipeline

The Inertia

John John Florence spends a lot of time at Pipeline getting barfed out of deep pits. He’s not the only one that wants to get barreled, either. Not by a long shot. Which can make for a crowded, chaotic lineup. But during his years and years of surfing the most fearsome wave on the planet, he’s gotten pretty good at avoiding others.

The thing about Pipe, though, is that it’s not just surfers in the water. There are countless photographers bobbing around out there, angling for the best shot of the best surfer. So John, usually being that guy, has learned a variety of ways to get out of their way.

Hopefully, the photographer won’t be in the way, but sometimes accidents happen. Many of those photographers are working piece rate, so there’s a big impetus for them to put themselves a little closer to harm’s way if it means getting that photo. Luckily for the lensman in this video, which comes from Off Da Lip, John John is both aware of speed bumps and has the talent to get over them.
