John John Florence doesn’t have three world titles because he’s a game player. Sure, he can play the pro surfing game, but in the end, John John Florence has three world titles because he is, on his day, the best surfer on the planet. He’s different than a lot of other pro surfers. He was groomed for it. A rare case of someone living up to the hype heaped on them when they were a grom.
Part of John’s surfing is how he connects with a wave. He matches power with power, and Hawaiian surf has a lot of power. He doesn’t try and tame it, though. Instead, he harnesses it and goes with it.
“There’s nothing more powerful, nothing I respect more, than nature,” he said. “If I can tune in and be with it, I feel like I can be a force with nature.”
He does a lot more in his preparation than just surf. Breathwork training, outdoor exploration, cold exposure — it’s all part of his training package. And it’s all detailed rather well in the video below.
