John John Florence shines in waves of all shapes and sizes, but he’s particularly great in waves with a bit of brunt behind them. Waves that are hard to surf. Waves in shifty lineups. Waves like Sunset. And during the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach event, he surfed just about as well as anyone expected him to — which is to say he surfed incredibly well.
In a heat against Joao Chianca and Jackson Baker in the Opening Round, John John managed to pull down a 8.33 and 7.50, which would end up being the highest heat total of the day.
