The Inertia

John John Florence has his fingers in a few pies. Florence Marine X, of course, but also a relatively under-the-radar surf hardware brand called VEIA. Working alongside the Pyzels and Dan McNamara, the CEO of Pyzel Surfboards, VEIA makes board bags, traction pads, leashes, a few shirts and hats, and a couple of auto accessories, like rack pads and tie-down straps.

John John has a hand in what VEIA creates, and the gear is made with the traveling surfer in mind. After so many years of bouncing all over the planet and surfing the best waves, he’s a guy who knows what he needs to make his life easier. And instead of searching around for it, he decided it would be a good idea to simply make it himself.

Florence recently visited the VEIA warehouse in Southern California for a bit of R&D, but they made time for a quick-fire interview with hard-hitting questions like “what’s your favorite ice cream flavor” and whether he prefers Kim or Kylie. He was also asked what his favorite claim is, and as you’d expect, it’s the no-claim claim.

“I think I do a lot of the claims where I look at the beach with nothing,” he laughed. “I don’t know, I get excited to hear the crowd erupt and you just look at the beach. My favorite claim is the no-claim.”
