The Inertia

John John Florence doesn’t really need to surf on the Tour. He’s one of the world’s most popular surfers, has three titles under his belt, and has many fingers in many surf-related pies. So, on January 21, he announced that he’ll be taking a bit of a break from competitive surfing. Just how big of a break has yet to be seen.

“I’ve decided to focus on surfing in a different way this year,” he wrote on Instagram. “I want to create the time to explore, find new waves, and draw different lines. I intend to compete full on for another world title in 2026, but right now this idea of adventure and creatively pushing my surfing as far as possible is really exciting!”

Florence, who is never one to show all of his cards, kept things pretty cryptic. “The ocean is so big and there are so many different types of waves to explore,” he continued. “I’m stoked to be filming into some new projects and planning to share the amazing places we get to go along the way.”

With Gabriel Medina out due to a pectoral injury and now Florence gone for an unknown number of events, the 2025 CT Tour winner might need to insert an asterisk after their name in the books.
