The North Shore is generally pretty flat in the summer months. August, in particular, is a month to go snorkeling. Surfing is not something you can rely on like you can in the winter. But every now and then, a rare summertime swell pops up on the radar, and surfers on the North Shore are, as they say, “out there.”
Such was the case for Koa Rothman and John John Florence recently. “North Shore just got like, six feet all of a sudden,” says Koa. “In the middle of summer. August… it’s honestly getting so big where it’s at the point that Pipe and Backdoor might start breaking.”
That is not a sentence you’ll hear much, if ever, in August. So it made sense that everyone was in the water as fast as they could possibly get there. You know those sessions where the waves are good and it’s just a handful of your friends out? Yeah, that’s what happened. Is there anything better?
