The surfers on the World Surf League’s Championship Tour are, of course, spectacular athletes. But today, at Jefferys Bay, South Africa, the wave was front and center. It was, in fact, the star of the show by a long measure. Consistent, see endless, walls rolled off the point, through Supertubes and on into Impossibles in the most beautiful fashion imaginable. The offshore wind groomed the faces most of the day.
And yes, the surfers took advantage, as you can see above. Long, long tubes were had (Yago Dora), hometown heroes returned in triumph (Jordy Smith), and a former child phenom continues to fulfill his promise in 2022 (Jack Robinson). The quarter finals are set for tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the women’s semis are set as well, and it’s wily veterans through: Tatiana Weston-Webb will meet Carissa Moore and Stephanie Gilmore will face Tyler Wright. Does a Gilmore-Moore final loom? J-Bay certainly provided the stage, the players are set to bring the drama.
