There are few contests in the surfing world that make the heart flutter quite like Jaws. The wave is just so big. It’s just so perfect. The tubes are enormous, the beatdowns horrendous. It is surfing’s Colosseum. And guess what? The Jaws Challenge is kicking off.
“We are all systems go for the Jaws Challenge at Pe’ahi to run on Monday, November 26,” said Mike Parsons, WSL BWT Commissioner. “We have officially issued a Green Alert and the competitors are all gearing up for the second Big Wave stop of the season. The swell is looking in the 35-to-45-foot face range and we are excited for the world’s best big wave surfers to put on a show for the world.”
This, of course, is very good news for the BWT. Big wave surfing can be a difficult thing to run a contest around, since big waves are a requirement and big waves are exactly all that common. The Nazaré Challenge, just a few short weeks ago, was a success by almost everyone’s standards—a tough thing to achieve in the surfing world.
With any luck, the Jaws Challenge will be as great a success as the Nazaré Challenge. It shouldn’t be difficult considering that Jaws is far more entertaining than most other waves on the planet.
