Lucas Chumbo had the first ride of a legendary day at Maverick’s. January 10, 2021. That’s an oddly interesting fact if for no other reason than because we rarely account for such things when recounting big, memorable swells. The wave of the day gets played and replayed on social media, it will make highlight reels and full-length films for years to come, but rarely are we given the context of how that day started for everybody in the lineup. Rarely do we talk about or know who was the first to paddle out, who was the last person to go in at the end of the day, and the butterfly effect from events between those moments.
January 10th Dimension is a full-length documentary about that very day at Maverick’s, all laid out to retell its events chronologically. It’s a unique take on a surf film/documentary because it creates an entirely new layer of storytelling that has less focus on the short-lived rides.
For example, the film takes a quick interlude with Othmane “Ottman” Choufani the first time we see him paddle out (just about five minutes in), and the Moroccan surfer details his journey from Agadir to California. This being during the peak of California’s and the rest of the world’s deadly COVID-19 winter surge. His trips through customs weren’t exactly a breeze. He arrived in San Francisco the day before the swell without a board, borrowed a 10’0″ from Grant “Twiggy” Baker, and was one of the first few people to join Lucas Chumbo in the lineup at sunrise.
We don’t get to watch many surf flicks through this lens and recounting such a historical one like this gives a fresh perspective. If you have an hour to dive in for part one you’ll appreciate this past winter at Maverick’s on an entirely new level.
