The Inertia

Jamie O’Brien just held the surf filmer Olympics, and he ended up losing. On a recent trip to Mexico, the freesurfer and YouTuber cajoled two of his cameramen out into the water to test their mettle in some barreling surf. Though O’Brien succeeded in his quest to get his crew out of their comfort zone, he paid the price in the form of one of his beloved Tokoro boards.

“What’s happening right now is we’re going to get Bill a wave,” said O’Brien, just before Bill destroyed his stick. “We talked him into it, took about an hour on the beach. I just thought there was some really nice small, fun ones for the filmers to actually get some really good waves. He kind of hemmed and hawed about it all morning, and I was like, ‘ Dude, we just gotta get out there and gotta do this, Billy.’ We’re going to get Billy in the barrel of his life. That’s the goal.”

Soon after, O’Brien was fishing the front half of his favorite board out of the surf. “Oh, Bill. We’re going to have a talk when you get to the beach,” he joked to camera. “I knew he was going to break my board.”

After mock reaming out Billy on the sand, JOB promptly sent his other filmer, Jacob Moss, into the fray. Jake fared better than his coworker, landing his first ‘real’ barrel and, most importantly, not destroying any borrowed boards.

“Filmers get waves too,” summed up O’Brien. “That was legendary.”
