Jamie O’Brien knows Pipeline about as well as a person can know a wave. He surfs it big, bigger, and biggest. He surfs it small and medium too. If there is a wave at Pipe he can surf, he’s probably surfed it. The ocean is an interesting place, though, and there’s always something… else. In this case, Pipeline was acting a little strange.
“Pipeline is firing on all cylinders,” Jamie said. “It’s about 10-15 feet, but there’s no one out… backwash is straight up firing.”
He was joined by a few others, including Marshall Alberga and Joey Johnson, the latter of whom was a little under the weather.
“It’s the perfect hangover cure,” Jamie laughed. “Surf Pipeline the wrong way.”
Of course, “surf Pipeline” is a bit of a stretch. Instead, they messed around in Pipeline’s very famous backwash, and although it probably isn’t quite as much fun as a Pipe tube, it sure does beat not surfing.
