The Inertia

A few days ago, we stumbled across Ben Gravy’s recent vlog installment. It featured him, Jamie O’Brien, and Blair Conklin surfing a New Jersey outer reef — an odd sentence, to say the least — during Hurricane Larry. Well, now Jamie has released his version of the trip.

It was a last-minute trip, as many good surf trips are. Ben called Jamie and informed him that Hurricane Larry, the storm that barreled its way up the East Coast, was likely going to produce some incredibly fun surf. “You jump on a flight for 16 hours, and now you’re finally here,” Jamie said. “Now you’re hoping and praying that tomorrow is going to be the day of all days. I flew across America for this.”

Well, as it turned out, the flight was worth it. Jamie, who has traveled for waves quite a bit more than most people, knows when to risk it. “I’m not jumping on a plane unless I’m going to get barreled,” he explained from Ben Gravy’s couch. “That’s the whole plan here: offshore winds, big barrels, on some potentially best East Coast waves ever.”

And if the title of Jamie’s vlog is anything to go by, he called it correctly. The title was screamed in all caps. “THE BEST WAVES I EVER SURFED IN NEW JERSEY!”
