The Inertia

Jamie O’Brien has gotten a lot of barrels, but he still hasn’t landed the barrel of his life. His latest hunt for that mythical tube took place at the equally legendary surf break of Skeleton Bay in Namibia.

“Waves are going to be super firing,” said O’Brien in the freezing cold pre-dawn darkness, shortly before heading out to chase down one of the 20-minute barrels Skeleton Bay is famous for. “It is like groundhog day, everyday same thing: Wake up, drink coffee, eat food, load the boards, get ready to get really barreled.”

However, somewhat surprisingly for a famed Pipeline charger, Jamie also seemed to be struck by some butterflies. “Little nervous. Little scared. I ain’t gonna lie,” he continued. “But that’s what makes surfing so fun, right? You don’t really know what is actually going to happen. It’s just mother nature. Hopefully today I get the barrel of my life, because I haven’t got the barrel of my life yet.”
