Waikiki is known for its slow, longboard-friendly waves, not its barrels. But after watching Jamie’s latest video, I’m just about ready to pack up my tube-board and head over to the South Shore. Waikiki works off of south swells, of course, so when the South Pacific starts up for the summer (right about now), there’s the potential for the wave to become a bit more than your average longboard can handle.
“This is the biggest swell I’ve seen over there in years,” says Jamie, “I never surf Waikiki unless it’s bigger than six foot, and right now it’s six-to-eight, maybe some bigger sets, and closing out the channel at [Ala Moana] Bowls.” You can tell Jamie means business when he starts loading the truck with as many boards as he can, “in case it turns on like crazy and I start breaking boards,” he says.
