The Inertia

Remember when Jamie O’Brien always had Poopies by his side to coerce into doing crazy stuff? Well, this is a moment that should remind you of those days. It’s either a hilarious prank to play on an unassuming friend or a completely terrifying and deadly one.

Now, first of all, we’re not exactly talking about the North Shore in December here. It’s summer on Oahu. Things are probably pretty low key (translation: potentially boring) and of course, there aren’t exactly a ton of waves on offer. Even when they do roll through along the Seven-Mile Miracle, you’re not likely to find the kind of barrels that litter our feeds during the winter months. So what’s a guy like Jamie O’Brien to do when Pipe suddenly looks fun one morning? Why not recruit a friend who doesn’t surf…like, at all…and is a self-described “horrible swimmer” for a few waves on the world’s deadliest reef? Should go just fine, right?

Actually, yes. It turns out things did go just fine. Skummy Diener is J.O.B.’s, “surfer, skateboarder, hellraiser” friend with apparently just one surf session under his belt before O’Brien does what any enthusiastic and encouraging friend would do: coerce him into a couple sessions at Pipe. When the kayaks come out, the duo finds themselves sharing the wave of the day. And in the end, everybody comes out unscathed.

Moral of the story: hang around J.O.B. long enough and you’re likely to become the next Poopies.
