One of the perks of living on the North Shore is the fact that you live basically on top of some of the best waves in the world. It lends itself to a certain type of surfer — one who is very good at getting barreled. Unfortunately, though, there are a lot of surfers who are very good at getting barreled on the North Shore, so the fight is a real one. There’s some semblance of a pecking order, but nothing like it was a few decades ago. Even someone like Jamie O’Brien, who grew up surfing Pipeline and is one of the best in the world, has to figure out a few tricks to get more waves when Pipe gets packed.
Since Jamie lives within spitting distance of Pipeline, he often finds himself playing a sort of host for traveling surfers who are visiting the area. In the episode above, he’s joined by Lucas Chumbo, a man who we generally hear about because of his Nazaré exploits. As you’d expect, Chumbo can also surf Pipeline very well, crowds or no crowds.
