Jamie O’Brien will surf just about any kind of wave he can find. Sure, he’d probably rather surf firing Pipeline when it’s on, but he’s not a wave-snob. Far from it, in fact — instead of getting bummed when the ocean’s not sending surf his way, he’s of the mindset that fun is where you find it. And in many cases, he finds his fun when the Waimea River is full to bursting. Surfing, as you know, is a lot more fun with friends, so Jamie called up Italo Ferreira, a man with more energy than a power plant, to join in.
He’s done it a million and one times, but it’s still one of his favorite things to do. When it rains in Hawaii, it pours. And when it pours, all that water in the hill flows through the Waimea River on its way to Waimea Bay. When it gets full enough, it breaks through the beach and makes one of the wildest waves on the North Shore. Not in size, exactly, but in sheer craziness.
