I, like many of you I assume, grew up on Sublime. When Bradley Nowell died, it hit hard. It’s strange how the death of someone you’ve never met can feel so intensely personal, isn’t it? Now, all these years later, Bradley Nowell’s son Jakob has taken up his father’s mantle, and it feels right. Recently, Jakob sat down with Conner Coffin on the 805 Cold Beer Surf Club to talk about… a whole lot.
A few years ago, Sublime with Rome played down the road from my house at an outdoor concert. It was strange that they were here because my house is on the outskirts of a small Canadian town of about 4,000 people. I went, of course, and was horrified when Rome — who had replaced Bradley as the front man — appeared to not know half the lyrics to songs that were the soundtrack of my teenage years. Rome’s tenure as Sublime’s singer didn’t last long, but Jakob? Jakob does Sublime and the memory of his father justice.
Sublime is the epitome of a Southern California band, and they’re playing at the upcoming US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. Conner and Jakob talked about a variety of things, including Jakob’s father’s legacy and the responsibility he feels to the remaining original members of Sublime. It’s a heavy torch to carry, after all.
It’s a good look at the evolution of a band that inspired a million bands and an entire generation.
