The Inertia

Winter has arrived. Last week, we saw the season open up in Hawaii, from Rocky Point to Pipeline to Jaws. Now, the swell has made its way to California, and Jacob Szekely was there to greet it.

“It’s not even light out yet, but I can hear the waves from my house,” said Szekely at the top of the video. “Hyped to be home for the first northwest swell of the year”

Zeke then grabbed boards and loaded his car to hit up a local break near his San Diego home. While it wasn’t on the same scale as the explosive action we’ve been seeing at places like Jaws, there were undeniably slabs to be to be ridden and tubes to be hunted.

Not only that, but the shallow, deceptively challenging wave took its pound of flesh from the San Diego locals. In a post-session monologue, Zeke describes how everyone was sent over the falls at one point in the session, including one surfer who went to the hospital for a rib injury.

“It’s not as easy as Nate Florence makes it seem, but it was fun,” summed up Szekely.
