The Inertia

To even the most cynical of observer, watching the Tahiti Pro yesterday, it was easy to see that the swell was rising. Each heat, more and more waves worthy of a Dram Tour appeared, and surfers worthy of a Dream Tour were there to catch them. Mr. Jack Robinson easily had the wave of the day, with a 9.43 that surely gave fans a glimpse of what could happen in Tahiti.

After setting up the women’s quarterfinals, the WSL finished three heats in the opening round on the men’s side at the end of the road. Brissa Hennessey took a big step in securing her place in the final five at lower Trestles when she pulled a 7.00 out of her board bag to take down Gabriela Bryan in the closing minutes of the heat. It surely wasn’t the deepest of barrels but it came at an opportune moment. Meanwhile, Lakey Peterson was able to keep her slim championship hopes alive by outlasting Tyler Wright.

There’ll be plenty on offer today, with Filipe Toledo, Kelly Slater, and Nathan Hedge getting action started today in what, on paper, looks to be an uber-interesting heat. We shall see.
