The Inertia

Eight tube specialists (four from Indo, and four from the rest of the world) remained when the Rip Curl Padang Padang resumed competition on Thursday. Competitors awoke to a solid pulse of swell gradually filling in. Hyped as one of the biggest swells to hit Indonesia in decades, anticipation for the day’s action was high. And while things started off a little slow from our vantage, Jack Robinson’s patience ultimately prevailed – locking in three 9s and a perfect 10 (for a heat total of 19.90) before the day was done.

“It was worth the wait,” said the 20-year-old West Australian. “This is one of the best contests all year and one of my Top 3 for sure. It might not be a QS or a CT, but it’s against the best guys at one of the best waves.”

Joining Robinson on the podium were Agus “Blacky” Setiawan, Made Adi Putra, and Mega Semadhi three Indonesians who put together stellar performances earning them a second, third, and fourth place respectively.

“I’m feeling pretty lucky,” said Semadhi. “I’ve got the whole collection of Finals trophies: fourth, third, second, and first. It was such an amazing two days of surfing. Everyone got so barreled. You can’t ask for more.”
