Jack Freestone and Alana Blanchard are both very good surfers. To become good at most athletic endeavors, you need to have a bit of competitive fire burning within you. They say the “best surfer is the one having the most fun,” which is supposed to mean that surfing isn’t about winning events—but what if someone feels as though winning heats is fun? What if, say, Kelly Slater has more fun beating people than he does actually riding waves? Would that make him the best surfer not only because he has 11 world titles, but because he’s actually the one having the most fun? It’s food for thought.
Jack and Alana had a surf off, and as with any good competition, there had to be a punishment for losing. Theirs had to do with the PCH and a sign that reads “HONK IF YOU THINK I’M CUTE!!”
