There are a lot of filmmakers in the world of surfing. But there is only one Jack Coleman. Coleman’s style, often imitated but never quite duplicated, is the skeleton under the flesh of such films as The Zone, Imaginary Carpet, and Zone Frequency.
Coleman, who is not only a filmmaker but an artist and photographer as well, generally likes to point his camera at surfers with a little more style than most. At surfers who are a little more unique than others. Surfers like Ryan Burch, Derrick Disney, Stephanie Gilmore, Bryce Young, Ari Browne, Tosh Tudor, Gavin Beschen, Leah Dawson, and Andy Nieblas, to name a few. All of whom are in his new film, Natural High.
“You don’t just watch a Jack Coleman movie, you plunge into Jack’s world,” wrote Jamie Brisick. “And it’s a joyous world — full of peeling waves and sideways drifts and luminous characters and always, always, always great music.”
Coleman is mostly a self-funded filmmaker, which is by design. He’s got a bit of help from Vissla, but for the most part, he’s independent. Which is why, if you’re able, you should drop a few bucks on Natural High. It’s worth it, I promise.
