Every year around this time footage emerges of a recently-dug-out Waimea River wave and some of the world’s best – in town for the Triple Crown – trying to tame her.
Resident award-winning vlogger Jamie O’Brien seems to always be on it when the getting is good and tends to make it look easy. And never has that been more apparent than when Ben Gravy, an amazing surfer and novelty aficionado in his own right, tagged along with Jamie on a recent day to hit the North Shore’s most famous novelty wave.
Watching other footage of the place, you’d be forgiven if you thought the place looked approachable, mellow even. But, based on Ben Gravy’s difficulty early on getting the swing of things, we know that it must be more difficult than it appears.
