Just the guy you’d want showing off a shiny new wave pool when the whole town is watching. Photo: Screenshot

Rotterdam’s iconic canals are filled with history and the idea of turning one of them into an outdoor urban wave pool goes to show how far the man-made wave movement has come in the past decade. The city itself isn’t all that far from the North Sea but the opportunity to drop a wave of any kind in the middle of a downtown area like the one created by RiF010 has definitely created a unique venue.

To celebrate the opening of the Surf Loch-powered canal pool, RiF010 invited the whole town out for a demo. And they chose Italo Ferreira to show it all off in front of hundreds of onlookers. As you’d expect, the former world champ put on a show.

Management at RiF010 says the pool can pump out waves in seven-second intervals and for various performance levels. Italo’s demo didn’t feature head-high reeling Surf Ranch-esque tubes but he seems to be the perfect guy to showcase the kind of surfing that can be done on small waves in such a compact space.

“That was a really special day, for sure,” he said. “I’m so happy to open this pool and have this moment with everybody here in Rotterdam. I hope I can have more sessions here.”

Even for a small wave, this looks like a really fun spot for a downtown session.
