In terms of defending his world title in 2021, Italo Ferreira doesn’t have much incentive to surf Waimea during his time on the North Shore this year. He doesn’t have much incentive to romp around with a boogie board in double overhead shorebreak either. In fact, both of these things could easily be considered professional hazards for an athlete of his caliber — one who’s in the prime of his career and should be a favorite to repeat in 2021. But then again, these are the things that make Italo Ferreira so easy to root for when his jersey goes on. We watch him compete and see that he’s having the same kind of fun he would have in that shorebreak.
Waimea, Pipe, overhead Sunset Beach, chest-high sand bar sessions; Italo is doing it all on the North Shore this winter, surfing his brains out like a stoked grom instead of an elite tour favorite.
