Snapper Rocks is an exceedingly good wave. It’s also an exceedingly crowded one. Being a world class wave in a place where there are as many talented surfers as there are animals that can kill you will do that. But if you’re familiar enough with the place and you’ve got both the skills and the courage to take off behind the rock, you might just be able to snag a good one without much of a battle. But that requires throwing yourself over the ledge onto a hollow wave that is full of warbles, full of foam, and not at all predictable — and you’ve got to do that right in front of a very large, very hard rock.
That’s the reason most folks sit a little more on the shoulder. In the video above, however, which was shot over the recent run of swell that banged into the Gold Coast, a handful of surfers tucked in behind that famous rock and found themselves on waves they’re going to be dreaming about for a long time.
