The Inertia

We’ll stake a claim that the kickout is, in fact, one of surfing’s most underrated moves. If you really think about it, you spend most of your days either daydreaming about or attempting to be spat out of the proper end of a heaving, perfect, cyclindrical opening on a wave, gently pushed out by its spray in glorious fashion.

But that’s not where most of your energy is actually applied. No, most waves end by dodging a lip or ducking under a wall of water threatening to crash down on your skull. And alas, the kickout actually plays a much more prominent role in your surfing than getting barreled.

Now, how often do you stop to hand out style points for a proper kickout? Isn’t it time we start?
