Dubai is a heck of an out-of-the-way destination to learn to nail an air reverse, but, hey, we're not judging. Sally Fitzgibbons likens it to surfing on Mars.

The Inertia

With her recent victory at the 6-Star 2013 Break Burleigh Pro, as well as a runner up finish at the 6-Star 2013 Hunter Ports Women’s Classic, Sally Fitzgibbons seems poised to push through to a maiden ASP World Championship Tour title in 2013.

Sally’s ASP World Tour career to date has earned her a runner up finish for rookie of the year in 2009, followed by runner up finishes in each of the ASP Women’s WCT Title’s for 2010, 2011 and 2012. These performances have helped establish Sally as the most consistent female surfer on the ASP Women’s WCT over the past 4 seasons.

As history has shown, consistency and event wins are the essential keys to winning an ASP WCT Title. Sally’s five World Title Event Victories (2012 Billabong Rio Pro, 2012 Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach, 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing, 2011 Subaru Pro TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival, and 2011 Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach) clearly show her capability and knack for winning on the biggest of stages. Sally has also shined at the ASP Women’s Stars Events with eight event wins to her name (2013 Breaka Burleigh Pro ASP 6-Star, 2012 Hunter Ports Women’s Classic ASP 6-Star, 2012 Australian Open of Surfing ASP 6-Star, 2011 Swatch Girls Pro ASP 6-Star, 2010 Estoril Billabong Girls ASP 6-Star, 2009 Estoril Billabong Girls ASP 6-Star, 2008 Roxy Pro Women’s Surfing Festival ASP 6-Star, 2008 Arrive Alive Central Coast Pro ASP 4-Star).

With these consistent solid results, the 22 year old Aussie regular footer from Gerroa, New South Wales, Australia has acquired over $360,000 in career earnings thus far on the lean ASP Women’s WCT, and has attained solid sponsorship from Roxy wetsuits and clothing, Red Bull energy drinks, Beach Toes, Red Bull Mobile, Firewire surfboards, Motorline Mini, Model Co, Waxaway, FCS fins and Gorilla Grip.

In order to be crowned winner of the 2013 ASP Women’s WCT, Sally will need to overcome 5-time ASP WCT Champ Stephanie Gilmore, 2011 Champ Carissa Moore, and 2004 Champ Sofia Mulanovich. Additionally, fellow contenders like Tyler Wright, Courtney Conologue, and Lakey Peterson will ensure fierce competition as the women’s side of professional competitive surfing continues to realize astounding growth in performance levels.

As it currently stands, the 2013 ASP Women’s WCT will host seven events, one of which (US Open of Surfing) is currently listed as tentative. The 2013 ASP Women’s WCT kicks things off on March 2nd at the Roxy Pro held at Snapper Rock Gold Coast.
