The Inertia

Mason Ho and “Hawaii’s Wedge” sound like something that’s too good to be true. It conjures images of a backwash and sidewash mutants, airdrops, ridiculous fly aways, tucking into barrels where you realize there probably shouldn’t be a person inside a barrel. You know, typical Mason Ho things. And honestly, things that are kind of typical of California’s infamous Wedge.

Suffice to say when Mason’s weekly Friday morning email came with the subject line, Surfing a Hawaiian Wedge, we cracked that baby right open and watched from start to finish. Those four words kind of tell you everything you need to know before hitting play. And sure enough, the wave itself looks like it’d be the final product if Mason himself designed a wavepool. An irreverent, unpredictable, and nearly unthinkable wave…well, unthinkable in the sense of “Who would even think to surf that thing?”

So here’s what went down:

With a recent south swell hitting Hawaii, Mason and Sheldon Paishon opted to do what many of us can relate to — stay away from the crowds.

“Perfect waves with all the people? Or not perfect waves with no people?” they questioned.

Choosing the latter can often be a blast. And while the two navigated this funky little backwash spot better than most could fathom, they also managed to look like they had a pretty good time just trading off waves, taking their lickings, and escaping without running up a major ding repair tab.
