I was not there, but I remember the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 like it was yesterday. I vividly remember it because when I first saw the terrifying footage, I felt like I had seen a ghost. So as you can imagine, when I came across the title of this video I was in disbelief and shock.

Upon investigation, this phenomenon is not an actual tsunami. Rather, “ice tsunamis,” or “ice shoves,” are actually caused by ocean/lake currents, strong winds, or temperature differences pushing ice onto the shore. Watch this ice shove slowly invade the shore of Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota as it literally busts down the front door of someone’s house.

It is certainly not my intention to equate ice shoves to the destruction of tsunamis. But it’s worth sharing because its tsunami-like properties are sort of scary/fascinating. For those with ADD-like tendencies (like myself), fast forward to the 2:30 minute mark.
