The city of Huntington Beach had a bit of a shocker this morning when a (relatively) cold snap sent hail into the streets of Surf City, USA.

After a few days of slightly inclement weather, Huntington Beach residents were not expecting white stuff to fall from the normally blue skies. “Everyone is freaking out,” said surfer Sumo Sato to the OC Register. “Main and PCH is packed with snow.”

The pier and the streets were quickly covered in pea-sized hail. Marine Safety Lieutenant Mike Beuerlein told the OC Register that in the 34 years he’s been working in HB, he’s only seen the sand covered in snow or hail three times. “I don’t know where the line is between hail and snow, but it sure looks like snow to me,” he said. “It’s surprising and amazing every time it happens.”

Beachgoers ran to lifeguard stands for cover, and more showers are expected over Southern California. A rare winter warning is in effect for many areas.
