Album Surfboards isn’t your run-of-the-mill surfboard company. In the 23 years since Matt Parker officially started it up, it has become something far more than just a plain old surfboard shaping business. Album’s latest film, Hues, is testament to that.
Aside from sometimes strange and varied shapes Parker creates, the most interesting thing about Album Surfboards is the team. But those interesting shapes are what draws that team in.
“The surfboard is a constant blending of curves and how they interact with the water. Making those curves feel comfortable, like an extension of your feet and your mind, is so interesting,” Parker said. “There shouldn’t be any rules about what a surfboard looks like.”
In Hues, the viewer follows along as Victor Bernardo, McKenzie Bowden, Brenden Margieson, Jack Freestone, and Clay Marzo trek around the North Shore and beyond. It’s not just Pipeline — although there certainly are a few staggeringly good clips from the gem of the 7 Mile Miracle — it’s full of different waves, all surfed amazingly well. Amazingly well, but differently than any of them would likely surf on a standard thruster.
