Summers in New Jersey are flat—especially in July. Recently, we were robbed of our passion, as Mother Nature decided not to produce any waves for nearly four months. She did, however, produce in an entirely different way. Thanks to the heavens for rainy days we ended up getting lucky enough to shoot a street surfing video one morning in our home town of Longport, New Jersey. But what came of our spontaneous idea shocked us all.
We uploaded our video with no expectation. To our surprise, it got posted on a few surf websites and ended up getting 25,000 views in a week. We were so stoked! Shortly after, GoPro contacted us about using the footage. And like any YouTuber would do, we said hell yeah. We sent them the footage, got two mounts in the mail, and didn’t hear from them again. A month later, GoPro posted the video above. This time, the video got 142,000 views in two days.
The very same day GoPro posted the video, I received a call on my cell phone from a blocked number—it was Fox News calling and they wanted to know if they could use our footage. They weren’t paying, but I figured any press (big or small) is good press. Shortly after, I received an e-mail follow up from Fox News stating that a van will be at our house at 8:45 a.m. to pick us up to get interviewed on America’s Newsroom. By this time we’re all super stoked, so, naturally, we get our ’80s gear on and round up a few beater boards to prepare for our big day. The next morning the Fox News van comes as promised and we’re off to an interview on national television. Boy, did we nail it! Here’s how we got interview on national television after our street surfing video went viral.
