Surfing in the winter is not for the faint of heart. It’s cold. It dangerous. It requires a lot of gear. Oh, and did we mention it’s cold? Like really cold.
While the luckiest of surfers are able to escape to a warm oasis to ride out the winter, most of us are stuck at home asking ourselves if it’s worth it. In my opinion, it’s always worth it. Well, most of the time anyways. I have yet to surf in the snow, so the jury’s still out on that one.
In the above video, a Great Lakes surfer talks about wintertime conditions, how she prepares herself for high-intensity situations, why she always sticks to the buddy system, and the gear she uses to stay warm in frigid surf. Major props to all you cold-water warriors; stay safe out there!
