Longboarding is one of the most beautiful forms of surfing to watch. It’s timeless. It’s graceful. And if you do it well, it looks almost effortless.
I’ve been longboarding for the better part of a decade and still have trouble making it to the nose. Where the pros make it look elegantly easy, I make it look awkward and clumsy and am guilty of doing the shuffle schooch in my attempt to move north. Recently, I’ve decided it’s time to leave the shuffle behind and finally master the cross step.
Cross stepping and nose riding are easier said than done. If you don’t have anyone to personally mentor you, one of the best ways to learn to cross step is by observing others in the lineup and watching videos online. In the above video, talented young surfer Kelis Kaleopaʻa walks us through the art of cross stepping — all that’s left for you to do is put it into practice.
