Ben Bischoff is a kayak fisherman and paddler based out of Australia’s Sunshine Coast. He was recently paddling surf skis with a friend when his buddy cracked his in half as he paddled over a wave. You can see the air the paddler catches, above. Surf skis, which are basically open-cockpit kayaks, are built with light, composite materials and are designed to surf downwind swell in the open ocean over distances. A real hoot if you can find the right conditions.
These guys apparently didn’t make it very far. They were in an area known as Mooloolaba Spit. The paddler was able to get the mangled kayak back to shore and posted the carnage on a Mooloolaba Paddlers Facebook page: “Second hand stellar ski for sale buy must assemble…. call Rob.” That boat’s gonna need a little fiberglass work.
