After six years in the making and becoming one of the staple stops of the WQS, the Los Cabos Open of Surf is changing dramatically. Boardwalk Productions and the Los Cabos Tourism Board have decided to take a break from the traditional QS event to focus on a new format which is all about fun. Instead, it will be much more than a surf contest. Given that the “grind” aspect of the event will be factored out of the equation in order to give way to a more family-gathering vibe, complete with food, music, and fashion, let’s look at it as if it was a complete dinner, from entrees to dessert. So take a seat and bon appétite!
The Appetizer – The Culinary Experience
From street food to high ranking kitchens, Mexican cuisine has always captivated the palates of many surf and turf calorie hungry surfers. Cabo truly is a premium gastronomic destination, featuring not just great food, but also served along with some savory cocktails which will basically just set your senses up for what is coming next.
The Main Course – The Fun (Foam) Factor
Sometimes while watching WSL’s livestream, you can tell the surfers just kind of want to have fun. Since their career depends on winning, they have to focus on scoring potential and picking good waves, because those win heats, heats win events, and events win titles.
Los Cabos Open is aiming to deliver a more organic kind of (non)competitive surfing, to see what would happen if the best surfer really is the one having the most fun out there. As this quote from their website puts it: “This year, the theme of the Los Cabos Open of Surf is the “Soft Top Soiree”; eight of the world’s most beloved freesurfers on foam, competing on a craft designed for just one purpose; to make surfing more fun.”
I don’t know about you, but in most of my most fun sessions ever, I’ve had a soft top under my feet. Competitors include a laid back mix of surfers like Rob Machado, Josh Kerr, Kalani Robb, Sage Erickson, Ollie Kurtz, Blair Conklin and a lot other familiar faces who enjoy the fun part of surfing more than the competitive part.
Dessert – The Sweet Summer Vibe
Described as an “electric mix” of mixology, amazing food, and live music, the event will feature the celebration of “The Cape” Hotel’s 4th year anniversary, topping this already sweet pie with the cherry that is the newMARK swimsuit fashion show, a modeling agency with an all-female board, representing a dynamic squad with DJs to bloggers, musicians, surfers, moms, and surfer moms.
All in all, this meeting of a laid back surf tribe on a rooftop overlooking one of Baja’s most iconic left surf breaks, Monuments Beach, is definitely going to be a full course meal that will set the tone for upcoming editions.
You can tune into the surfing action through Surfline’s webcam and moreover, you can keep up with the event through their Instagram Account and the official event hashtags:

But honestly, you should just come down and see/surf for yourself, because after all, there are no bad days in Baja.
