The Inertia

Far off the Chilean coastline, a tiny island sits in the middle of a powerful ocean. Alejandro Selkirk Island is home to an extraordinary community of people who know exactly how special their home is. The waves that batter the jagged coastline are both feared and respected by the fishermen that work the thriving waters. That’s why Ramón Navarro, Léa Brassy, and Kohl Christensen recently made the journey there to look for waves—but what they found was something far more special. “While it’s true we didn’t find the waves we were looking for,” said Navarro, “the real treasure we found was a tight-knit community of fishermen very mindful of their resources and protecting them in a way that we’d never seen.”
