The Inertia

There are parts of the world where people are now prohibited from surfing. That’s a very odd reality to accept once a person lets that sink in, but it is our reality indeed.

On Monday, President Emmanuel Macron ordered his citizens to stay home — a strict and direct effort to “severely restrict movements for the next 15 days at least” in response to the global spread of COVID-19. Without a necessary reason to be outside the home, like traveling to work, French citizens are essentially banned from trips to the beach, among other things, or risk facing some kind of punishment.

“He said the previous measures, including the closing of schools, cafes and non-essential shops, had proved insufficient,” French filmmaker Camille Le Saux told The Inertia.

What Le Saux filmed at La Gravière just before all this can either be a glass-half-full moment or a glass-half-empty one. It can be torture for some to look back on a playful, clean, barreling day like this or sheer torture.

“The sun shining brightly and a generous swell sublimated by offshore wind came to touch the Landes coast,” Le Saux adds. “The result: a magical session on the beach breaks of La Gravière.”

“Maybe the last one for a while.”
