The Cuervo Surf Ranch Classic went down September 29, and it was a banger. The forecast looked good: perfect waves, a hint of manure in the breeze, and a whole bunch of the world’s best longboarders. There were a lot of highlights, but one in particular stands out. It was Honolua Blomfield’s switch foot barrel that earned her a perfect 10.
Blomfield, along with Edouard Delpero, took home the winner’s trophies after a full day of waves. Kassia Meador, speaking during Joel Tudor’s heat, called it “some of the most beautiful longboarding she’s ever seen in her life.” The event took place after a long, Covid-induced break. Prior to the Surf Ranch Classic, the last WLT event took place at the Noosa Longboard Open in February, 2020.
Thirty-six of the world’s best longboarders, including Blomfield, Delpero, Soleil Errico, Sally Cohen, Justin Quintal, Harrison Roach, Phil Rajzman, and of course Mr. Tudor, competed against each other in a bid for the first WLT qualification points ever awarded at the Ranch. Each surfer got two lefts and two rights, and the best scores from each combined to create the rankings. Eventually, the top eight moved onto the semis, where they were whittled down to the top two. In the final, the remaining pair surfed one left and one right.
Next on the list for the World Longboard Tour is Malibu, surely one of the most iconic longboard waves on the planet. The waiting period for that event is October 3-13, and as of this writing, it looks likely that it will run in the back half of the window. Watch it live on Worldsurfleague.com
