Sage Erickson, like most surfers, has a connection with the ocean. She moved around a lot as a child, then surfed her way into a career that has her jumping all over the planet. But everyone needs to have a place they think of as home, and for Erickson, that’s the ocean. “The ocean has always been a constant in my life,” she says. “It’s been something that’s always there. It can’t be taken away and it’s a source of comfort.”
Back in January, the World Surf League announced the We Are One Ocean campaign. It will call on world leaders to protect and conserve at least 30 percent of the global ocean, including international waters, by 2030.
Since the League announced the campaign, it’s been pointing cameras at surfers and asking them why the ocean is important to them. Mikey February, Dr. Cliff Kapono, and Lakey Peterson are among the many supporters so far that Erickson joined.
“I think people need the ocean because you need nature,” Erickson says. “You need beauty that you can’t create.”
