By now, you’ve likely heard about the World Surf League’s campaign called “We Are One Ocean.” In short, they want to see 30 percent of the world’s oceans protected by the year 2030 and strengthening conservation efforts for the other 70 percent. They’re calling it 30×30. It’s a big ask, but if the people all yell loudly enough, our voices can be heard.
A global petition is circulating (which you should definitely sign), and once it has enough signatures, it’ll be sent to leaders of the U.N.
“Establishing fully and highly protected areas is an incredible way to build resiliency in our ocean,” said Reece Pacheco, SVP of Ocean Responsibility for the WSL. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect critical ocean habitat and biodiversity for generations to come. This isn’t just about the ocean. It’s about people. By protecting the ocean, and hitting 30×30, we guarantee a healthier future for all.”
Part of any good campaign is making it visible. No one’s going to sign something they don’t know about, after all, so the World Surf League enlisted a handful of their athletes to create short videos that explain why, exactly, the ocean should be protected. Italo Ferreira’s is the latest.
