John John Florence is currently sitting on his very first Pipe Masters title. It was a weirdly long time coming — everyone knew he’d win it at some point, but man, did it ever take a long time. As an aside, one of the most entertaining moments was when Kelly Slater burned him on purpose (Kelly might’ve got the idea from the guy at the 3:25 mark). All in the name of fun, of course. Before the event sounded the horn, the waves on the North Shore were really, really good.
“The North Shore had an amazing run of waves from December 1st to December 7th from Pipe and Backdoor to the outer reefs,” John’s team explained. And since practice makes perfect, John, along with brothers Ivan and Nathan, practiced, practiced, practiced. Although we’d wager even if Pipe Masters wasn’t coming up, he’d still have been out there.
